ILLIT Returns with “Cherish
ILLIT has announced their comeback with “Cherish.” As the conflict between Min Hee-jin, the leader of Ador who spearheaded NewJeans, and HYBE seems unresolved in South Korea, ILLIT, who made a sensational debut with “Magnetic,” has released their second mini-album.
This album includes five tracks: the title track “Cherish (My Love),” along with “I Will Like You,” “IYKYK (If You Know You Know),” “Pimple,” and “Tick-Tack.” The songs have been well-received, garnering positive responses.
The title track, “Cherish (My Love),” is praised for its catchy melody and the members’ clear, delicate vocal tones, blending perfectly into a comfortable listening experience. It’s easy to find yourself singing along, repeating, “Ch ch ch ch cherish my love~.”
The Symbolism of the “Cherish (My Love)” Music Video
The music video narrates the story of friendship and love from the perspective of girls experiencing love. To fully appreciate ILLIT’s playful music video, a basic understanding of Korean is helpful. Featured in the video is the “Sarangnees Club” with a unique character, Sarangnee.
The word “Sarangnees” (사랑니) directly translates to “Love Tooth.” In Korea, “wisdom tooth” holds a special name and meaning. Instead of “wisdom tooth,” Koreans call it “sarangnee” (pronounced *sarangnees*), which means “Love Tooth.” The origin of this naming is unknown, but in Korea, the wisdom tooth appears around the age when people begin to feel romantic love.
Therefore, the “Love Tooth” in ILLIT’s music video symbolizes “love.”
According to ILLIT’s agency, BeliftLab, the music video for this mini-album was “inspired by the members’ real-life experiences with their wisdom teeth.” They described it as a quirky and endearing take on a common teenage rite of passage, expressing a unique perspective on growing pains.
