The 2024 Melon Music Awards (MMA), a major South Korean music awards show hosted by Melon (Melon), the country’s largest music streaming platform, is set to take place on November 30, 2024.

As with last year, the event will be held at Inspire Arena. This post covers the lineup, key awards categories, and how to watch the livestream for MMA 2024.

Now in its 16th year, the MMA honors top artists and songs based on Melon chart rankings, with winners selected based on a combination of streaming scores and fan voting. This year’s main awards include:

• Artist of the Year
• Album of the Year, Best Song of the Year
• Record of the Year
• Rookie of the Year

Additional awards cover Best Performance, Best Music Style, Best Music Video, among others, and special categories are dedicated to international artists, including J-Pop. Eligible songs for this year’s awards were released from November 2023 to October 2024, with no restrictions on release dates for the Hot Trend category.

The single ‘Love 119’ by RIIZE, introduced by a Korean.

RIIZE, a rookie group under SM Entertainment, debuted in September 2023 and has already amassed a dazzling array of awards.

They were awarded Favorite New Artist at the

MAMA Awards on November 28, 2023, named Rookie of the Year at the Melon Music Awards on December 2, 2023, and won the Rookie Award at the Seoul Music Awards on January 2, 2024, among others. They’re emerging as the next rising boy group.

Their latest song ‘Love 119’ exudes a vibe reminiscent of late 1990s to mid-2000s Korean pop music for Koreans. The familiar melody… Ah! They sampled izi’s ‘Emergency Room.’

Though many young people today may not be familiar with izi, ‘Emergency Room,’ released in 2005, was a beloved song that swept the nation as the OST for the drama ‘Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang,’ dominating the BGM and cellphone ringtone charts on the social networking site ‘Cyworld.’

Perhaps that’s why RIIZE’s ‘Love 119’ feels so familiar. Upon hearing it for the first time, it reminded the author of HOT, the idol group that SM Entertainment first launched. The parts where everyone sings together (we call this ‘chorus’) are reminiscent of HOT’s ‘Hope’

This song evokes the unique freshness and sentimentality that only ‘teenagers’ possess. RIIZE’s song selection, which resonates so readily with the public, feels truly clever.

Two weeks ago, the Japanese version of the song was also released.
